Scores of individuals experience constipation. This difficult health issue afflicts millions of people each day of their lives. It can cause horrendous pain and lead to substantial amounts of time within the bathroom. I am one of these folks who used to put up with constipation many times every week from constipation, but by following some straightforward and natural methods, I’ve lessened the impact constipation has had on my life and well-being. While my commentary is long, and writing about constipation is not something I enjoyed, I wished to share with you what has succeeded for me to cure constipation naturally and lessen the destructive impact this health concern has had on my life.

Reflecting upon my life, I think I have been constipated for most of it. It’s been a frequent issue for my life, and it’s caused me pain and a lot more time in the restroom than anyone need to spend there. Constipation is something virtually every human being and many non-human animals experience from time-to-time, but whatever you may think about it,persistent constipation is a blight — one that has troubled me for a large amount of my life.

For many years, I have sought after strategies to cure constipation naturally. Several are just common everyday things that we have a tendency to overlook as natural ways to cure, or at least relieve, constipation. I’m not a medical expert by any means, nor do I have education in natural healing techniques — but by virtue of having chronic constipation most of my life, I have become of an professional on what works naturally for me. Perhaps some of these ideas will be successful for you.

When I was growing up while living with my parents as a kid and teenager, I ate a lot of processed foods, particularly during the winter. When garden produce was in short supply and regularly unavailable, we tend to eat principally processed food. My father had stomach ulcers and so our diet at home was terribly bland. Dad was a meat and potato kind of man. And, so, that’s what we tended to eat since my father ruled the roost. Other than in the summer, the vegetables and fruits we tended to consume were canned by Mom or came in cans from the grocery store. I used to be constipated a lot.

After I married, I tried to make sure we had balanced diets with fresh fruits and vegetables or at least frozen fruits and vegetables. My husband and I don’t really like canned produce. I added natural fiber to our diets long before it was the modern thing to do. You know what? The constipation improved. I slowly realized how advantageous the natural fiber of fruits and veggies really IS a method to cure constipation naturally. The constipation was still there, however was a lot more manageable and not as painful.

Then, about ten years ago, my life unexpectedly changed. As I got out of bed one November morning, my legs were numb. I believed that I perhaps had twisted in a unusual way while lifting some heavy objects the previous day. However, over the subsequent month, the numbness in my legs got worse, and it traveled up to around my waist. I had some days where I couldn’t walk. The doctors believed I was either starting MS or a virus had attacked my spinal column. Since they found no MS legions on my brain, they decided on the latter. To relieve my symptoms, the doctors gave me 5 days of super powerful intravenous steroids which really created chaos in my system. Because I had little feeling below the waist, my intestines didn’t function properly. The outcome — the constipation was much worse. Therefore, for the last 10 years, I’ve been attempting different combinations of natural strategies to get my body to eliminate waste more efficiently so that I will stay healthy.

Here is an outline of how I have attempted to cure constipation naturally:

1. Eat fruits and vegetables; lots of them! We hear this incessantly for our general health from dietary specialists and physicians. That’s because most vegetables and fruits are filled with natural fiber, and fiber is what causes our intestines move the waste and food through to be expelled without stopping up the plumbing. I eat mostly fresh or frozen veggies and fruits. I don’t eat much of the canned or processed varieties because I think the largest part of the natural fiber is removed during the processing. By the way, when watermelon is in season, I realize this fruit to be one of the most effective natural weapons to reduce constipation.

2. Reduce the intake of red meats and dairy product. I’ve significantly reduced dairy products and red meats. I’ve found after I eat dairy products or consume red meats, my constipation becomes worse — sometimes significantly worse. I would much rather avoid that yummy ice cream sundae now than reap the results of being constipated and having to waste an hour in the lavatory when I have much more necessary things to do with my life.

3. Cut back or fully remove most processed foods from your diet and eat as gluten free as possible. I typically end up with some wheat in my foods, but I really try not to. (That’s not an simple feat nowadays!!!) While I understand wheat is a natural product, it becomes unnatural when it is processed. I have observed when I keep the wheat to a minimum or not eat it at all, the constipation is less of a issue. When I consume more processed foods, which tends to be served in restaurants and avoiding wheat becomes a real challenge, the constipation is worse over the next few days.

4. Eat healthy nuts. I have also added healthy nuts like almonds, walnuts, pecans and pistachios to my diet. These are a sensible supply of natural fiber, and appear to aid the ability of the intestines to remove the waste.

5. Take Vitamin E and Fish Oil each day. These are healthy fats which seem to help my digestive system and help to reduce the constipation I have. These 2 things also appear to have a side benefit of serving to my skin keep its natural luster and elasticity.

6. Take Vitamin D3 each day — at least 1000 mg. Since we live in a northern climate where it snows 5 months of the year and the sun is low in the sky during the winter, we do not get enough Vitamin D3 naturally. My husband and I take Vitamin D3 each day. We have been doing this for a long time even before the recent medical and news reports have described the benefits of Vitamin D3 and how most folks, except those within the tropics where the sun shines virtually each day, lack satisfactory amounts of Vitamin D3. Whether or not this is true, I know that Vitamin D3 seems to help cut back my constipation. It’s a naturally occurring vitamin if an individual gets enough sun; therefore adding it as supplement has appeared to assist scale back my constipation and it’s improved my general health during the winter.

7. Take fiber tablets and stool softener each day. Both my husband and I take 2 fiber tablets and one stool softener every day. This one factor alone has changed the life of my husband. He has irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). One of the outcomes of IBS can be terrible constipation, which he has had. However, when he began taking fiber and also the stool softener every day, his IBS almost completely disappeared as did his constipation. He is currently grateful to be “regular” provided he doesn’t eat processed foods in large quantities. The fiber tablets and stool softener helps me as well, and although my constipation remains with me, it’s not as much as it used to be. FYI, fiber also comes in the form of powder that you are able to combine with water. I won’t name particular fiber powder type products, but ask your pharmacist about it if you would rather “drink” your fiber than take a pill.

8. Drink a lot of water. I strive to drink as much water as I can. I know the “official” suggestion are eight to ten eight oz. glasses every day. This total is a good quantity to shoot for, but typically I drink more than eight glasses of water every, which doesn’t seem to hurt me. Sure I have to urinate more, but you know what? The water helps lessen my constipation, and what could be more natural than drinking lots of water every day?

9. Exercise every day; or a minimum of five days each week. Forcing myself to exercise consistently helps my intestines to work properly with less constipation allowing waste and food to travel through my intestines. A number of years ago, I was visiting my grandma when she was residing in an assisted living facility. She was nearly a hundred years old and complaining about health issues. I asked her if she got any exercise on a recurring basis and she replied sarcastically “Oh, you think that’s the answer for everything!” Well, I do believe it! I have seen consistent exercise do some outstanding things for my husband, who was very overweight and lost over 150 pounds just by starting to exercise and adjust his diet. I do believe exercise can help improve most everything in our body, soul and spirit.

10. Attempt taking probiotics. I had been eating yogurt with probiotics as another natural method to assist my digestion and keep the intestines moving. But, since I don’t tolerate dairy products very well, I’ve switched to probiotic tablets or “pearls.” (There are plenty of brands out there.) For those who don’t know, a probiotic helps digestion by manufacturing sensible “flora” or the good bacteria required in your abdomen and intestines to effectively digest food and purge waste.

11. Try a colon cleanse product. Our son has inherited our digestive challenges. He has discovered that for quick relief of constipation, a colon cleanser functions best for him. In individuals who eat a “western” hemisphere diet that is excessive in fat and processed foods, their intestines and colons aren’t purging as they should naturally. Waste accumulates, particularly within the colon. A colon cleanse product removes all the garbage that builds up in the lining of the intestines and colon. Once that waste is out of the digestive system, the intestines function as they should until we put more rubbish in there and it needs to be removed again.
